Tribuneindia is the largest English newspaper masstamilan published in India. It publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice and restraint and moderation are its hallmarks. The paper is also an independent paper in the true sense of the term. It has two sister publications, the Punjabi Tribune and the Dainik Tribune. The First issue of The Tribune was launched on February 2, 1881 and it started as a small local newspaper with its main aim to promote education through the medium of English in Punjab. It was a success in the first instance.

The strong-worded editorials, supported by a few powerful articles, knocked down the claims of Leitner and a public opinion was formed in favour of Dyal Singh’s stand on higher education through English only.

When The Tribune was established, there teachertn were no newspapers in India other than a few in Bengal and Madras. It was a new concept to have a national newspaper in a foreign language, but Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, the founder of the newspaper, managed to make it happen within a few years after Punjab had been annexed by the British.
He took up all the public causes, and the newspaper’s voice was taken notice of. It is said that one Lieut-Governor of Punjab urged a delegation meeting him to ventilate their grievances through The Tribune.
Dyal Singh and his Bengali Brahmo friends played a crucial role in making The Tribune more than a provincial paper. The newspaper became a nationalist paper of tremendous power and prestige. It shook the Empire and brilliantly evoked the idea of the poor Indian oppressed by a greedy Englishman.

It was the ideal of a nation-wide institution with the capital and management being owned by the Indians and the people of the country.
The first editor of The Tribune was Seetalchandra Mookerjee. He was followed by Seetalakanta Chatterjee and B.C. Pal. In 1919, the paper was involved in the disturbances that erupted across Punjab.
It had a large research cell that brought out 26 publications, both in Urdu and English. It was a leading journal of the times and its influence is still felt in the Indian press.
The trustees of the Trust are still alive and yareel trying to keep Sardar Dyal Singh’s inspiring philosophy intact. The newspaper continues to be a voice of dissent and is a vital part of Indian culture and history. Its key articles are still relevant and can be read by people of all ages, and its stories have had far-reaching effects on the history of India.
